FirstMark Spain has completed the first stage of its network deployment covering 26 cities using BWA technology from Siemens and Floware.
Joint press release by FirstMark, Siemens Information and Communication, and Floware London, Frankfurt, Madrid, Or Yehuda, May 22, 2001. Today FirstMark Spain announced that it has deployed Siemens and Floware Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) Network technology to provide services in 26 Spanish cities. Phase 1 involved deployment of 171 base stations throughout Spain to cover all cities with more than 200,000 inhabitants. In the coming months, FirstMark will expand its network to additional regions.
The company is now building commercial momentum with a national marketing campaign aimed at the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) market. FirstMark Spain launched commercial broadband wireless access (BWA) services in early March, and has already successfully provided services to its first customers.
To assist in first-phase system installation, FirstMark Spain worked together with Siemens Information and Communication Networks Group (ICN), and its partner, Floware Wireless Systems (NASDAQ: FLRE), which supplied WALKair BWA network equipment in the 3.5 GHz frequency range. As it moves into the stage of massive subscriber connection phase, FirstMark Spain has begun ordering advanced WALKair terminal stations to connect individual customers to the network, and will continue to rely on Siemens for professional services.
Commenting on the news, Jose Fernandez Lizaran, CEO of FirstMark Spain, said, "We are pleased that the market is responding so positively to our new BWA services, and very satisfied with the network's performance. The advanced infrastructure enables us to deliver high performance telecommunication services at very competitive prices."
Luis Duenas, CEO ICN Group of Siemens Spain added, "The successful installation of this complicated network in such a condensed timeframe proves the value of BWA technology, along with the necessity for experienced project management. With each new installation of WALKair-based BWA networks, we become more convinced that fixed wireless technology is a winning solution for SMEs."
Amnon Yacoby, CEO of Floware, said, "We are proud that our WALKair technology was chosen by FirstMark Spain, one of the strongest carriers in an important BWA market. So far, more than 1000 terminals have been ordered, and we expect to supply many more as they continue to roll out commercial services. We remain dedicated to providing FirstMark Spain with the uncompromising support and ongoing technology enhancements that will enable them to maximize revenues and profits from demanding SME customers."
