North Rock Announces New Offering and Lowered Prices
North Rock Communications
June 1, 2006; North Rock today announced they will be upgrading their current wireless offering to a next generation WiMAX platform and changing the pricing structure of their current wireless service. North Rock will be officially launching its’ next generation WiMAX product, tentatively named ‘North Rock Max!’, in the Summer of 2006, in a phased approach, while still offering service over its current Wireless Network. The upgrade will allow for higher speeds, up to 2mb, and better reach across the Island. As with the current generation platform ‘North Rock Max!’ will offer both Internet access and a telephone line with unlimited local calling.
“WiMAX is the next big step for wireless Internet access. Over the next few years you will start to see WiMAX replace WiFi as the wireless standard of choice. With chip maker Intel, firmly behind WiMAX you will see it built into many different types of devices including laptops and phones in the near future.” said General Manager of North Rock Communications Ltd, Vicki Coelho. Mrs. Coelho says that the new offering, solidifies Bermuda as a leader in technology and innovation. “Bermuda joins cities such as Toronto and Hong Kong as early adopters of the new WiMAX standard and North Rock is excited to be at the forefront of this new technology.” North Rock Communications began offering their original fixed wireless to the corporate marketplace in January 2000, with residential wireless service coming on line in June 2002.
In September 2004 North Rock became the only alternative to the incumbent telephone company by offering a local phone line. “We have had great success with our current wireless product which has been providing high speed Internet for more than 6 years. During this time we have enjoyed tremendous growth and success, even weathering two hurricanes.”
North Rock has done extensive testing of their new WiMAX product. “The testing process has been ongoing over a period of 2 years, while we evaluated various offerings from different manufacturers. We believe that we have implemented the most reliable and flexible product that will allow us to add products and features as they become available.”
In the lead up to their WiMAX Launch, North Rock has teamed with two internationally recognized technology companies, Alvarion and Lucent Tecnologies. “Our partnership with Lucent and Alvarion allow us to ensure that our product not only meets the needs of the local market, but is built to an internationally recognized standard” Alvarion’s BreezeMAX, WiMAX is built from the ground up based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard. BreezeMAX supports fixed, nomadic and portable services with a clear path for the emerging WiMAX mobile industry based on the IEEE 802.16e standard. The system has excellent sensitivity and market leading OFDM radio technology. It is robust and operates in adverse conditions and non-line-of-sight locations. North Rock Communications WiMAX offering is powered by Intel’s PRO/Wireless 5116 broadband interface chip and is designed to provide reliable and stable broadband access services to a wide range of customers, including residential, SOHO, large enterprise and multi-tenant customers. In 2004 Alvarion recognized North Rock Communications for their outstanding performance through Hurricane Fabian. The customers were delighted with the stability and reliability of their Wireless Internet service.
Lucent Technologies is North Rock Communications systems integrator, providing the resources and skills to ensure a successful deployment of this significant project. From planning, coordination, control and management Lucent is assisting in the implementation of the WiMAX equipment and voice switch upgrade. The upgrade to North Rock’s voice services will provide Caller ID, Conference Calling, Three-Way calling, and more. In addition, with full integration with the BreezeMAX equipment, voice calls will have a much higher quality. Pricing for the new offering will be announced when the new service comes online in July. North Rock’s current wireless offering, which includes unlimited local calling and Internet access, will now be priced at $49.95 a month for access up to 256k. The installation fee has also been lowered by $75. “While there are a number of ways for customers to access the Internet, North Rock Wireless has a clear advantage over other offerings. With high-speed Internet access, a phone line offering unlimited local calling, and a single point of contact for support, all for our lowest rate ever, North Rock Wireless is Bermuda’s best choice.”
